The Type M119 E 50 power unit used by the 500 E was derived from the unit found in the 500 SL. The 500 E was the first car to feature what Mercedes called the Standard Deck engine where the same crankcase was used for both 4.2 and 5-litre applications. As a result, the 500 E's engine height was 16.5mm lower than in the 500 SL.
